Bahrain: Qal’at al-Bahrain

Yesterday I got seven postcards including my first card from Bahrain.

Bahrain is an island state and kingdom in the Middle East. It is connected to Saudi Arabia by a causeway. In 1971 Bahrain became independent from the United Kingdom and today it has the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf. The capital of Bahrain is Manama.

The card shows the Qal’at al-Bahrain. Qal’at al-Bahrain is a archaeological site in northern Bahrain. The site was inhabited by humans between BCE 2300 and the 16th century and consists of various layers of human remains. It was once the capital of the Dilmun civilisation and was later an important harbour town. Excavations started in 1954. Since 2005 is Qal’at al-Bahrain on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Stamps:
Charity Stamp (issued 2009 (?))
King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa (from set of sixteen) (issued 15-07-2002)

Thank You very much Edwin!
